Benefits for Organizations

Membership in the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids allows arts and cultural organizations to apply for operating support grants. Additionally, membership allows organizations to take advantage of the Arts Council’s many services for free.

Benefits include:

Financial Support: each year the Arts Council awards:
• Operating support grants to organization members with operating budgets under $1,000,000.
• Arts education grants to arts educators in the Kent Intermediate School District for programs, projects, and equipment not provided for in school budgets.
• Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) minigrants to nonprofits in seven West Michigan counties.
Strategic Support: each year the Arts Council offers these services:
• Eight workshops that address arts organizations’ structural needs and artists’ concerns.
• Grant-writing workshops focused on state mingrants and state arts grants.
• One-on-one mentoring covering issues related to running a nonprofit.
• Shared marketing efforts via the Cultural Marketing Group, the Culture Pass and calendar listings.

Advocacy
In 2009 the Arts Council has focused its advocacy efforts on Governor Granholm’s proposed $6.1 million arts and culture budget cut. The Arts Council’s staff works closely with ArtServe Michigan, an arts advocacy organization based in Lansing, to reach local legislators and the governor’s office and make our concerns about arts and cultural budget cuts known.

• The Arts Council offers a searchable database for organizations and individual artists.
• Organization and artist members will be listed in Arts Council printed materials.
